Weekly Health Update:

Mental Attitude: Could Relationship History Hinder Your Chance of Marital Success? A new study finds that the more
relationship experience you have before your wedding day, the less likely it is that you'll end up in a happy marriage. Investigators
analyzed data from an ongoing national study called the Relationship Development Study. On average, the subjects who engaged in more relationships prior to getting married reported lower quality marriages when compared with those who had fewer past relationships. More partners indicates more experience, which may be one of the underlying reasons for this finding. Greater
relationship experience may mean a person is more likely to compare their current mate to past partners in a number of areas,
including sexual skills, attractiveness, and communication skills. University of Virginia, August 2014

Health Alert: Study Sheds Light on How Loud Noises Damage Hearing. An experiment conducted by researchers at the
University of Leicester in the United Kingdom explains how loud noise can damage hearing. Understanding speech is dependent on
fast transmission of auditory signals through the auditory nerve, which transports sound waves from the cochlea of the inner ear to the brain. The research team found that noise-induced hearing loss is primarily caused by the thinning of the protective myelin coating
around the auditory nerve. This finding may lead to prevention strategies for hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and could even lead to cures for these conditions. Frontiers in Neuroanatomy, August 2014

Diet: Pregnant Women Should Avoid Eating Tuna. In a new review of seafood safety, Consumer Reports advises pregnant women
to avoid eating tuna due to the risk of mercury exposure. While some question this advice, the researchers at Consumer Reports point out that 20% of tuna samples collected by the Food and Drug Administration in the past decade have had mercury levels 200% above average. Consumer Reports considers the following seafoods as safer choices: wild Alaska salmon, shrimp, sardines, tilapia, scallops, and oysters. Consumer Reports, August 2014

Exercise: Looking for More Flexibility? Stretching is an exercise designed to increase your body’s range of motion. The American
Council on Exercise reports that flexibility training can provide the following benefits: improved posture and freedom of movement,
improved mental and physical relaxation, reduced muscle soreness, and lower risk of injury. So, what are you waiting for? Start
stretching. The American Council on Exercise, February 2013

Chiropractic: Movement Therapies & Relaxation Techniques for Children. A 2010 analysis of chiropractic practices found that
96% of Chiropractors in the United States recommend the use of movement therapies and relaxation techniques to their patients. The current research suggests that early training on movement therapies such as yoga and relaxation techniques -- like controlled breathing or meditation -- can be a useful tool for children to help prevent or manage certain health problems including anxiety, attention-deficit disorders, stress, asthma, and back and neck pain. Alternative Therapies Health Medicine, August 2014

Wellness/Prevention: Laser Device May Replace Pin Prick for Measuring Blood Sugar. Researchers have developed a "quantum
cascade laser" capable of measuring blood sugar levels. The results of initial tests show that the laser’s average reading has a larger
error than standard blood sugar testing but is within a range that meets required clinical accuracy. The team is excited by their
discovery as Dr. Claire Gmachl explains, "The quantum cascade laser can be designed to emit light across a very wide wavelength
range, its usability is not just for glucose detection, but could conceivably be used for other medical sensing and monitoring
applications." Biomedical Optics Express, July 2014
